Long before a Wild Things Mail Club envelope arrives in your mailbox, it begins as a pencil sketch.
Characters are introduced in a sketchbook. Tiny details are refined. Story cards are drafted, illustrated, and assembled. Little paper treasures slowly gather into neat stacks across my drawing desk.
I thought you might enjoy a peek behind the scenes at some of the work currently in progress.
Today I’m sharing a few sketches, pencil roughs, and works-in-progress from the studio.
Every illustration, story card, and paper keepsake begins the same way: with a blank page and an idea inspired by the natural world.
It’s certainly a slower process than clicking a button and sending something to a printer, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Part of the joy of Wild Things Mail Club is knowing that each mailing has been thoughtfully created, one illustration at a time.
Thank you for following along on this little adventure. I can’t wait to tuck these finished pieces into future envelopes and send them out into the world.
I’m so excited to finish illustrating a new set of woodland wreaths.
I love the idea that a tiny illustration can feel like a gentle reminder to step outside, notice something beautiful, or wander a little farther down the trail.
I imagine they could be trail markers or badges from an old field guide—simple, adventurous, and full of quiet optimism.

I have a feeling these little wreaths will find their way into future Wild Things Mail Club letters. Until then… wander often, stay curious.
Over the next few weeks, I will be filling envelopes with small illustrated treasures and imagining them making their way to mailboxes across the country.
Today I wanted to share a tiny peek inside the mailbag.

And that’s only the beginning.

Each collection is illustrated by hand using watercolor and colored pencil, then turned into a set of paper goods—postcards, greeting cards, stickers, bookmarks, and small printed pieces—designed to feel like something found and kept.

All my artwork on these products is story-driven, hand drawn, starting with a pencil sketch, human made with traditional art materials. Perfect for every nature lover out there like me!
One of the lessons in the Surface Design Immersion course I’ve been taking for the past couple months includes creating a hand drawn pattern. I love everything analog! This method is such a great way to understand how repeating patterns work.
My vision was to draw bits you might see on the forest floor when your walking on a trail in the woods. I personally love to pick things up and bring them home with me as reminders of the adventure and for drawing reference.
Step one was to build a repeat tile by hand using a square piece of paper and a black pen.
Step two was to cut your square paper in half both ways and rearrange the sections. Then you can see how the motifs connect across edges and how the patterns flow when repeated. It’s magical!
After digitizing this pattern in Adobe Illustrator, I loved it! But it was all line work and I wanted it to be a little bolder, so I filled in all the shapes and colored it with my collection color palette. This is the First Frost color palette.
It has become my hero print for my new collection – coming soon!
