What’s Inside Tier 2?

Wild Things Mail Club by Terri Wilhelm

A Little More to the Story

Each month, Wild Things Mail Club Tier 2 members receive the next chapter of our ongoing woodland story, along with a few handmade treasures that belong to the world of the story.

Wild Things Mail Club by Terri Wilhelm

Alongside the illustrated story card, you’ll find a little piece of ephemera inspired by that month’s character, setting, or adventure. A field note, a keepsake, a tiny bit of correspondence—each one is designed to feel as though it has wandered out of the story and into your mailbox.

I love these little details because they make the story feel more real. They’re not necessarily things you need… they’re simply little things to discover, keep, and enjoy.

Think of them as tiny souvenirs from Acorn Hollow.

Each month’s mailing is a small invitation to slow down, follow along, and step a little further into the story.

The Best of 2025

Winter cabin illustration by Terri Wilhelm

I made so much art this year that I adore! I created the art I want to see out there. Cheers to the best of 2025!

I completed six collage illustrations of six different habitats – marsh, shoreline, wetlands, nature preserve, under the sea and tree canopy. I fell in love with doing these collages, which is a technique new to me. It’s fun to dream up a habitat and fill it with flora and fauna. My goal is to complete six more habitats in 2026 so I will have a total of 12 and then hopefully hold an art exhibition.

I also created a lot of other art that I love. I honed in on my focus and specialty – to specialize in storybook art with whimsical, handcrafted charm reminiscent of children’s book illustrations or educational posters. With my love for observing the natural world, I’ve been able to translate everyday moments—flowers in bloom, birds in the yard, shoreline scenes, and afternoon hikes in the woods—into whimsical sketches, watercolor illustrations and hand-lettered pages.

I am so grateful I got to travel to Naples, Florida earlier this year for some rest and relaxation and one of my favorite things – beach time. I also got to spend time at the lake house on Lake Michigan in Door County. And we had a new deck built in our backyard, where we love to hang out.

Terri Wilhelm adventures 2025

Many local micro adventures brought me great joy!

I have a couple specific goals for the new year:

  • I want to finish the artwork and publish two picture books. I already have the storyboarding done so I just need to illustrate the final artwork. I have character designs and briefs for at least three more stories but I really want to accomplish this goal so my target is two books.
  • I want to illustration six more collage illustrations of more habitats so I have a set of 12 total. Then I want to show them off all together at an exhibition.

Cheers to more art and more adventure in 2026!

First Snow Bunnies

First Snow Bunnies by Terri Wilhelm

I recently illustrated this trio of bunnies sitting in the snow, gazing upward toward a deep blue, snowy night sky. I envisioned a peaceful and magical scene, as if the rabbits are watching their first snowfall or marveling at something shimmering above them.

Ideas almost always start out with a pencil sketch which leads to a watercolor illustration. I painted this one on Fluid 6 inch x 8 inch hot press paper.

Each bunny has its own subtle personality—one looking up with its head tilted, one sitting squarely forward, and another posed more upright. Sparse winter plants on either side frame the trio, adding a touch of quiet wilderness.

I turned the watercolor illustration into a greeting card and postcard—a warm, whimsical, and serene winter feel—perfect for a holiday greeting, a winter note, or any message meant to bring a sense of calm wonder.

We got over 10 inches of snow lately so I’m in the mood for winter illustrations. Stay tuned for more sweet storybook charm!

Drawing character sketches

I’ve been having some fun drawing character sketches in my sketchbook.

These foxes and crows were inspired by the shenanigans I see in the neighborhood. They will join the owls I sketches recently in my upcoming stories.

These characters are part of a new series of stories I’m writing and illustrating, inspired by the animals in my backyard and my neighborhood.

I have the character names and storyboards done; now I’m working on character sketches and dummy books. Excited to show you more soon!

A to Z Animal Zine

I love to draw animals! I’m so excited to finish this illustration project, which has become one of my favorite pieces!

This is an A to Z animal zine, inspired by Sarah Dyer’s Patreon drawing session. I tore a piece of paper out of my Moleskin A3 sketchbook (16.5″ x 12″) and folded and cut it into a snake book so it would have 26 panels. Sarah provided a selection of reference photos for each letter. I couldn’t attend her live session so I worked on mine in my spare time over the course of a week. The folds end up with a few hidden panels so I added a little nature scene on those end pieces where the book turns.

I painted the back side of the paper with a blue and green wash and used colored pencils to draw a faux topographic map pattern.

I adore this project because it got me to draw a great variety of animals.

I love making zines, a mini “magazine” from one simple piece of paper, so I’m excited to make more like this.

I often hear the advice to make the kind of artwork you would like to get hired for so I’m going to make more art like these zines!

Character Sketch

I loved dreaming up this random character with her friend while doodling in my sketchbook.

Next up I want to do more sketches of them on their adventures through the outdoors together and cook up a fun story.

I also want to dream up more characters to build a library of characters to tap into for a variety of art and storytelling.

Enchanting Series at the Creek

I had fun brainstorming and painting these sketchbook pages in February, which make great postcards, or might be cool for illustrations for a picture book or kidlit book covers.

These three paintings are sunrise, sunset and twilight at the creek.

I also painted this winter scene called Deer at the Cabin in February, inspired by the little bit of winter we had.

I painted all of them in a Hahnemuhle A5 Watercolor sketchbook with Winsor Newton watercolor set, and printed them on cardstock for to test as postcards.

I love making art in a series like this, enchanting nature scenes with a few animals, so I look forward to dreaming up more.
