What’s the point of starting/joining a subscription snail mail club? I was explaining to my 84-year-old mom what a subscription snail mail club is. She asked, “what’s the point?” But then she told me that many of the residents at the retirement community where she lives sit in chairs near the mailroom waiting for the postal carrier to deliver their mail. Every single day. And they’re disappointed when all they get are ads and bills.

Ding Ding Ding! That is the point of signing up to a subscription snail mail club. You get a wonderful letter in the mail, connecting with someone out there in the world.

As is typical of me, I wanted to offer something a little different, a little more. I wanted to provide people with supplies to send your own snail mail. Hence, a postcard and greeting card and a coordinating sticker. My Wild Things Snail Mail Club also includes a bookmark because reading a good old fashioned paper book is so much better than a digital book, so you need a nice bookmark. And, you get a tiny note with an envelope so you can pass on a handwritten message, “Thinking of you” to someone. Believe me, it will make their day!

My mail club will include a snail mail letter from me but it has a twist – a reminder, an invitation to notice something today, even if it’s just on your daily walk or exploring in your own backyard or going on a micro adventure.

My sister and I have been sending each other a postcard a week for over ten years. Sometimes it’s just a couple lines about how beautiful the weather has been. Other times, it’s a note about a fun night out with friends It’s not hard to do. And it means the world to open that mailbox and find a note from her, to know she’s thinking of me amidst her busy life. It’s also very satisfying to pass on that feeling to her.

The point is to pay attention to the natural world, to get away from the TV, computer, tablet and phone screens. And to connect with others.
