Free Motion Practice

I had a few squares left over from my nine-patch swap, so I took the opportunity to practice my free motion quilting, something I have always wanted to master.

free motion practiceIf you already do your own machine quilting, you know how much fun this is!

free motion blocksI felt really good with this practice session, and now I can’t wait to get to the quilt tops that have piling up, waiting to be finished. My least favorite thing about quilting larger quilts is the basting step. All those pins, ugh. Does anyone else use basting spray?

I’m going to practice on the mini quilt tops I finished piecing this week. You will definitely see more of this from me – you can count on that!

  • Fun, right?! I love basting spray – the 505 is my favorite… definitely saves hours of time!

  • Nice job Terri! When I machine quilt, I used fusible batting, I just don’t enjoy all the basting–it puts me to sleep. It looks like all your practice is paying off your quilting is awesome!

  • Your quilting looks great! I still use safety pins…but I keep meaning to try a basting spray!

  • Fun! I’ve tried basting spray but it gets everything sticky so I’m still sticking to pins.

  • Looks like you have that free motion quilting down! My turn tomorrow afternoon! Have a great weekend getting those quilts done, I can’t wait to see them!

  • Your free motion quilting looks great! Mine never comes out that well… i need to practice more. as for the spray, I just recently started using it and I love it. It can get the floor a little messy, so i wouldn’t use it on carpet or anything. you will surely want to mop after use. However, I notice that I get little to no puckering on the quilt back when I use a spray. (I get lots when I pin). For a larger quilt I might try using both spray and a few pins. Its definitely worth a shot, right? good luck!

  • Good for you! I’ve been needing to practice the FM too. I thought I would join the mini quilt monday to test it out, but no time.

Your garden looks great. I love irises. Finally planted my flower boxes last weekend. We’re going big on Sunflowers everywhere this year.
