Playing With the Color in My Scraps

I have been challenging myself to get reacquainted with my stash and my scraps. A couple color-coordinated patchwork blocks seemed like a great use of my time.

I started out with the blue scrap pile.

Since I was on a roll with the cool tones, I continued to dig through my stash for greens, which was really fun.

Then I decided it was time to warm things up a bit, so I pulled out my color wheel to see what was opposite of blue and green. Turns out I needed to find red-orange, so I looked for fabrics that ranged from red to orange. I thought it would be fun to include some pink splashes too.

How fun was that?! No, seriously, it was great fun. I’ve had zero inspiration to use my scraps, so this was a fun challenge. What better way to mix up my stash to really see what I have.

I am hoping to float these three blocks (about 10 inches each) in a solid fabric to make a quilt, something similar to this beautiful quilt, but I haven’t decided yet which solid color to use for the background. Have you challenged yourself lately?

  1. Wonderful blocks!!! I love all three! Surprisingly, even the orange/red/pink one…. I just started getting into these kinds of hot colors this year. Previously, blues and greens were my favorite color groups. Funny, huh? LOVE the green one…. it’s a very calming palette. The combination of scraps works really well together!! I think the green and the orange one are my favorites! 🙂 What about a dark brown background? I think that would look wonderful and grounding to these particular color blocks you’ve made….

  2. Hi Terri.
I was just by a blog this morning that was doing this very thing with blocks.
What size is each square? that you are making?
I really want to do this, and make it just one large patchy quilt FOR ME! 🙂 lovely~love the hot oranges/reds!
    I’m definitely a brights girl.

  3. Ohhhh loving the oranges/pinks/reds block – that one leaps out at me….

I’ve been challenging myself with bead work – love it, but the fabric paper I’m sewing on is tough and my finger is protesting somewhat at the present moment in time lol – it’s just gonna have to toughen up.

I think the blocks would look fabulous set in White so the colours really pop but I look forward to seeing what colour way you go with :0)

  4. I think I have to go with everyone else-chocolate brown! I’m partial to the blue/brown combo, though, so I’m biased! Really sweet blocks and I can’t wait to see the finished quilt! As for challenging myself…I’m trying to hand stitch the entire binding to the t-shirt quilt I’m working on in the next hour! (Because, you see, I’m doing so well…)

  5. I do the same thing with my scraps! I love the way theylook grouped by color, and my plans are the same – I think yellow around all them but we’ll see. Can’t wait to see more!
