Week 26 Animal Art Series: Nature

In order to continue my mission to draw all the time and fill up more sketchbooks in 2016, I’m working on a new weekly theme to do daily drawings, while experimenting with watercolor. At the end of each week, it’s nice to have lots of new drawings and a full page illustration.

Week 26 in my animal art series features a hand-lettered saying “Nature is new every morning” and a bouquet of wildflowers and butterflies. I’m so excited about this page because it’s the last page in my sketchbook AND it marks the halfway point in my 2016 animal art series!

Since I already experimented with my neon gouache paint on my insects study, I thought it would be good to try it again on another illustration to make the subject matter more fun and less scary.

Week 21 Animal Art Series: Neon Insects

In order to continue my mission to draw all the time and fill up more sketchbooks in 2016, I’m working on a new weekly theme to do daily drawings, while experimenting with watercolor. At the end of each week, it’s nice to have lots of new drawings and a full page illustration.

I finished my sketchbook page for week 21 in my animal art series with Neon Insects.

I wanted the initial drawings to look like a bumble bee, may fly, wasp, fly, mosquito, cockroach, boxelder, centipede, walking stick and earwig, but I didn’t want them to look so realistic that the page would be scary. So I experimented with neon gouache paint for the first time, which was fun to try. I thought the consistency was more like acrylic than gouache or watercolor paint. I don’t love acrylic but I loved the brightness results so I will definitely use these colors more in my illustration projects.
