First Snow Bunnies

First Snow Bunnies by Terri Wilhelm

I recently illustrated this trio of bunnies sitting in the snow, gazing upward toward a deep blue, snowy night sky. I envisioned a peaceful and magical scene, as if the rabbits are watching their first snowfall or marveling at something shimmering above them.

Ideas almost always start out with a pencil sketch which leads to a watercolor illustration. I painted this one on Fluid 6 inch x 8 inch hot press paper.

Each bunny has its own subtle personality—one looking up with its head tilted, one sitting squarely forward, and another posed more upright. Sparse winter plants on either side frame the trio, adding a touch of quiet wilderness.

I turned the watercolor illustration into a greeting card and postcard—a warm, whimsical, and serene winter feel—perfect for a holiday greeting, a winter note, or any message meant to bring a sense of calm wonder.

We got over 10 inches of snow lately so I’m in the mood for winter illustrations. Stay tuned for more sweet storybook charm!

December Sketchbook Art

I started a new plan this year to create seasonal art by setting up a new sketchbook each month, brainstorming a theme, color palette, surface pattern, greeting card to hand-letter and character sketches and vignettes for little stories. I’m a very in-the-moment kind of person so I’m hoping this will help me establish seasonal art I can promote over the next year, in advance of the season to allow time for publishing and manufacturing.

I painted this pattern in my December sketchbook for a wrapping paper or greeting card design.

I also hand-lettered a greeting card design in two different sizes, a square shape and a rectangular shape.

Next up I’m working on a few woodland animal character sketches for little story vignettes.

One of my favorite things to do is simply draw an animal or scene with a pencil but I also love painting, so I’m excited to see these little illustrations come to live with watercolor!

It’s the most wonderful time of year!

Postcard Series: Give Thanks, Be Thankful

In between working on my weekly sketchbook pages of animal art illustrations, and trying to create something everyday, I’m also having fun practicing hand lettering combined with watercolor wreaths. I turned these watercolor postcard paintings into new notecards in my Etsy shop.

Monthly Paper Goods Subscription

I’m trying out a subscription to a monthly box of paper goods from OliveBox.

For January, I received this box of goodies, which included an illustrated notecard, an AHA! notepad, and a beautiful wooden box full of stamps for the alphabet and numbers.

That wooden box is THE coolest thing!Olive Box Jan. 2014

For the December box, I received a sheet of stickers, a gold glitter gel pen, sparkly washi tape, sparkly butcher’s twine, and a sparkly notecard.

Olive Box Dec. 2013

Dec. 2013Jan. 2014It’s so fun to receive a box full of paper goods around the middle of every month. Of course, I wish it came more often, and I wish it had more in it.

I have been contemplating the idea of putting together a subscription like this with paper goodies from my shop (things like a couple notecards, a postcard, stickers, a cool pen), so it’s fun to try this subscription to see what comes each month.
