Notes From the Office: Fresh-Cut Flowers

I’ve been wanting to share with you the fresh-cut flowers I’ve had in my home office lately. They brighten up my office, especially on days that are overcast and gloomy.

I brought home three packages of gerbera daisies recently from the greenhouse where my mom works. The sales staff was going to throw away these daisies because they couldn’t sell them anymore. They only lasted about a week so maybe they weren’t as fresh anymore. But I’m not picky!

This next bouquet lasted over two weeks before I had to replace them with the above fresh finds.

It turns out having weekly fresh-cut flowers also provides wonderful inspiration and drawing reference, especially this time of year when nature in my yard is slowing down and going dormant for the upcoming winter months.

I was happy to learn that a local grocery store sells fresh-cut flowers for a great price and a great selection. It’s such a treat to have flowers on my desk these days!

Home Office Rule No. 8: Take a Break

My home office / new graphic design studio is officially open for business, so it’s fun to continue to share my home office rules, benefits, perks and incentives that contribute to a better work environment and creative space.

Home Office Rule No. 8: Take a Break.

Breaks are encouraged in my home office. It’s good to step back from a project, change your scenery, get feedback on something you’re working on. I thought this post was spot-on when it comes to taking a break and stepping away from your desk to get re-energized.

Graphic design and illustration can be so much about problem-solving and story-telling. Sometimes we get too close to the project and can think outside the box. Taking a break can help improve our capacity for creative thinking, to come up with unique, innovative solutions.

It can be as simple as removing yourself from your computer and smart phone, trying something new, and getting moving. Sometimes I like to get out my sketchbook and draw something different and random. Or get outside and go for a bike ride.

Some offices have rules like hours, dress code, music, pets, contests and more, so I’m making a fun list of rules and benefits for my very own office, but more like concepts or an atmosphere that encourages creativity and individuality. I want the home office to be as creative environment as possible. Stay tuned for more fun rules and benefits!
