Art for Week 25

Last week was the summer solstice and the official start of summer. I spent the week working on new products for my shop, writing patterns for those new products, practicing my drawing, tending to our gardens, looking for a job, and working on the next project for our summer curriculum, which is to create a poster for an every day event.

It was also the week for me to send a set of art cards to Michelle for our seasonal swaps. We agreed to try this layered page technique where you layer a book page or cut-out from a newspaper onto your watercolor paper and illustration an image over that. Since I mailed my set of cards to Michelle last week, and she hasn’t received them yet, I can’t share them. Darn it!

I really loved how this technique turned out, so I decided to try it on a few more cards that I can share with you today.

I used the flowers that are blooming in our gardens these days as inspiration for my illustrations.

I searched high and low for a quote or a saying that would fit with these illustrations, or capture the week I had. My cousin Linda gave me some encouragement last week that continues to resonate with me, so I decided to use her words for my journaling.

Check out the art my creative buddies Michelle and Sandra have been adding to our Flickr group – it’s inspiring to see the variety of styles, inspirations and techniques we’re experimenting with.

  1. Your cards are beautiful. Such a fun technique which I’m sure we’ll use often! I love the softness of your cards this week, you have captured the Rose so well and Daisies are a firm favourite. How lovely to get encouragement from your cousin and family members. I’m eagerly awaiting the pattern release – I have my fabrics at the ready!

  2. Those are really nice. You are very creative. Keep up the good work. It is nice to know that you are doing what you love. And love what you are doing.

  4. Hello Terri,

Just catching up with blog. Love that you used some newspaper as the background for the art cards this week. Hope to see the real ones as soon as they arrive. Happy creating.

p.s. love the little bright bags you made in a previous post.

  5. Cute art cards!! I love the newsprint too. I’m curious to know if you had any trouble with the ink running when you used the acrylic medium.

    1. Thanks Kim! I didn’t have any trouble with ink running. I applied the acrylic medium to the bottom of the newsprint and adhered it to the watercolor paper. Then I brushed Gesso over the newsprint to give it some texture. After my newly layered card was dry, I pencil sketched my image, went over the lines with a fine pen, and then painted watercolor. I used some colored pencils for the final touches. Worked like a charm!
