The Old Farmers Almanac

There’s something I love about old-fashioned almanacs.

Maybe it’s the combination of useful information and curious little facts, or the way they seem to hold a whole year of seasonal knowledge between two covers.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac has been doing just that since 1792. Filled with weather predictions, moon phases, gardening advice, folklore, astronomical information, and seasonal observations, it’s become a familiar tradition for generations of curious readers. I’ve always thought there was something rather wonderful about that.

A little book to flip through, learn something new, check the calendar, or discover an interesting tidbit you might not have known before.

A Woodland Cousin to the Old Farmer’s Almanac

When I began putting together the Pocket Papers for Wild Things Mail Club, I thought it would be fun to borrow a little inspiration from that old tradition.

What if we had a little almanac of our own?

Not quite as ambitious as the original, of course! Just a small collection of seasonal discoveries, nature notes, interesting facts, and things to look for as the months go by.

The idea is to celebrate the little things happening in the natural world throughout the year. The changing seasons, familiar woodland visitors, interesting bits of nature lore, and all those small discoveries that make you stop and take a closer look.

Collecting Little Wonders

Our first Wild Things Almanac card made its way into the October mailings, and I have lots of ideas for the months ahead.

I like imagining these little cards being tucked into a nature journal, kept in a desk drawer, added to a growing collection, or pulled out now and then when a little seasonal curiosity strikes.

There’s something satisfying about collecting small pieces of information and inspiration, especially when they remind us to slow down and pay attention to the world around us.

After all, there’s always something interesting happening just outside the window. And who knows? Maybe a little woodland almanac will become its own sort of tradition.

Here’s to a year filled with little discoveries, curious wanderings, and plenty of things worth noticing. Here’s to keeping a little curiosity in our pockets and finding wonder in the everyday.
