Under the Sea Illustration

Under the Sea by Terri Wilhelm

Check out my new habitat illustration – Under the Sea! I wanted to evoke a sense of the rich biodiversity of coral reefs and ocean life in a playful and artistic way.

Under the Sea by Terri Wilhelm

I did this illustration similar to my previous ones, with a watercolor background that is a gentle gradient of blues, depicting the sea from shallow to deeper water as it moves downward. And then I added collage elements.

I love the lone seagull floating at the surface of the water with three more circling in the distance.

I added lots of marine life, from a sea turtle swimming peacefully, to a shark lurking in the background, to an octopus among the coral reef and sea plants to a variety of fish in different sizes, shapes and colors scattered through.

The ocean floor has a variety of red, yellow, purple, and pink hues, enhancing the diversity of the ecosystem, with long swaying seaweed framing the corner.

Another whimsical, colorful, and educational illustration, for educational purposes or storybook art.

I almost forgot to tell you that I used fluorescent paint in a few spots and this is what the original looks like when shining a blue light on it!

From My Illustration Library: Under the Sea

I am participating in an art challenge where the theme is “Under the Sea.” I found a lot of illustrations in my sketchbooks with this theme that I wanted to share in one place.

I called this series of tiny art Beach Life, which isn’t under the sea but close enough to add to my list of favorite ocean-related illustrations from my library.

Week 16: Sailfish

In order to continue my mission to draw all the time and fill up more sketchbooks in 2016, I’m working on a new weekly theme to do daily drawings, while experimenting with watercolor. At the end of each week, it’s nice to have lots of new drawings and a full page illustration.

It’s been great fun been trying to draw all sorts of animals this year. This week, a big Sailfish and schools of Mackerel took over my sketchbook page. I used watercolor for the base layers and all the outlining and details. I’m growing to really love illustrating with my paints and tiny paintbrushes.

It’s been great fun been trying to draw all sorts of animals, so last week’s theme was Coral Reef. I used gouache this time which always produces brighter colors, with a splashes of watercolor. I tried hard not to use my black Micron pens for any outlining or details, which was a good challenge in working with paint and tiny paintbrushes.

New Tiny Art: Set of Coral Reef

It’s been awhile since I’ve made tiny art, so I’m excited to be able to share some new work.

Since I was in Florida recently for Spring Break, I still have the ocean, the beach and sea life on my mind, so I went with a coral reef theme for this week’s set of tiny art.

It’s fun to experiment on a small canvas (2.5″ x 3.5″) with a variety of art supplies – this week I used my gouache palette, Micron pens and white Gelly Roll pen to add a few details.

I try to post these tiny pieces of art regularly on Instagram if you want to follow along. I love the challenge of coming up with a weekly theme and working on a small canvas, so I’m hoping to continue this regular art practice in 2016.

Happy drawing!

Week 5 Weekly Sketchbook Page: Whales

In order to continue my mission to draw all the time and fill up more sketchbooks in 2016, I’m working on a new weekly theme to do daily drawings, while experimenting with watercolor (no grid this week!). At the end of each week, it’s great to have seven new drawings and a full page illustration.

Last week’s theme was Whales, with a light blue splash in the background.
