Week 16: Sailfish

In order to continue my mission to draw all the time and fill up more sketchbooks in 2016, I’m working on a new weekly theme to do daily drawings, while experimenting with watercolor. At the end of each week, it’s nice to have lots of new drawings and a full page illustration.

It’s been great fun been trying to draw all sorts of animals this year. This week, a big Sailfish and schools of Mackerel took over my sketchbook page. I used watercolor for the base layers and all the outlining and details. I’m growing to really love illustrating with my paints and tiny paintbrushes.

It’s been great fun been trying to draw all sorts of animals this year, so my latest theme is Saltwater Fish. I used watercolor, and tried hard not to use my black Micron pens for any outlining or details. I’m growing to really love illustrating with my paints and tiny paintbrushes.

Week 13 Sketchbook Page: Coral Reef

In order to continue my mission to draw all the time and fill up more sketchbooks in 2016, I’m working on a new weekly theme to do daily drawings, while experimenting with watercolor. At the end of each week, it’s nice to have lots of new drawings and a full page illustration.

It’s been great fun been trying to draw all sorts of animals, so last week’s theme was Coral Reef. I used gouache this time which always produces brighter colors, with a splashes of watercolor. I tried hard not to use my black Micron pens for any outlining or details, which was a good challenge in working with paint and tiny paintbrushes.

New Tiny Art: Set of Coral Reef

It’s been awhile since I’ve made tiny art, so I’m excited to be able to share some new work.

Since I was in Florida recently for Spring Break, I still have the ocean, the beach and sea life on my mind, so I went with a coral reef theme for this week’s set of tiny art.

It’s fun to experiment on a small canvas (2.5″ x 3.5″) with a variety of art supplies – this week I used my gouache palette, Micron pens and white Gelly Roll pen to add a few details.

I try to post these tiny pieces of art regularly on Instagram if you want to follow along. I love the challenge of coming up with a weekly theme and working on a small canvas, so I’m hoping to continue this regular art practice in 2016.

Happy drawing!

It’s been great fun been trying to draw all sorts of animals, so last week’s theme was Sea Life, with a splash of watercolor in the background and more hand lettering practice. I love drawing ocean life so I’m going to keep going with this theme.

Week 5 Weekly Sketchbook Page: Whales

In order to continue my mission to draw all the time and fill up more sketchbooks in 2016, I’m working on a new weekly theme to do daily drawings, while experimenting with watercolor (no grid this week!). At the end of each week, it’s great to have seven new drawings and a full page illustration.

Last week’s theme was Whales, with a light blue splash in the background.

Colors of the Ocean Finished

Thank goodness for the break in the semester we had last week, when I made time to work on this project. I am excited to share my finished Colors of the Ocean quilt!

started this project as a part of Cherry’s quilt-along.

I made progress pretty quickly by finishing the top. And then it sat for awhile.

It was wonderful having time over spring break to quilt it and bind it. I love how the straight line quilting turned out. And I adore these colors. I am definitely sold on this modern look of solids and straight line quilting.

Favorite Colors

In a recent post, Juicy Bits blogger asked readers to name their three favorite colors as their entry for her latest giveaway (which is an awesome giveaway, by the way). My favorite colors are represented by the colors, textures and places in nature that I experienced this summer:

The fresh spring green of budding leaves in spring, and

The crisp blue green of the ocean,

The bright magenta of the peonies in our yard.

I have taken a color theory class a couple times at my local fabric store, and found it to be so much more fascinating that you might expect. We talked about the usual – color, value, intensity and scale. But we learned how one color can affect another. We also learned how to play with the color wheel. There is so much to learn about color theory, but often times you can just feel it when you see a color you like or don’t like. I love those classes!

Do you have a favorite color?
