TGIF – Weekend Exploring

Yay, it’s Friday! Time to reflect on and appreciate things that happened over the past week, and share with you a new weekend postcard featuring one of my recent photos.

  • I’m thankful to my friends at the Genius Bar at the Apple store for taking good care of my computer. My hard drive crashed last weekend so they replaced it with a new one. It was fun rebuilding my computer from scratch. Really. I enjoy doing that.
  • Thank goodness I backup my hard drive regularly. I did lose a few things, which isn’t too bad.
  • It was SO nice to have two warm-ish sunny days earlier this week. I loved the spring teaser.
  • It was a treat to have an afternoon iced coffee on one of those warm-ish days.
  • It’s cool going to business meetings at coffee shops.
  • I’m excited to have three (3!) new illustrated map projects to do at work.
  • It’s always a relief to have a good annual check–up with my arthritis doctor.
  • I am excited for a new freelance project that involves licensed art!

Last weekend we managed to put together a bunch of kitty pictures in a collage frame, but we never made it to one of our favorite restaurants for cocktails and appetizers. And we never managed to get our giant world map framed. So I’m hoping we muster up the energy to do those things this weekend. I might also have to venture to the camera store to  look at some new lenses.

Happy Friday. Enjoy your weekend!

TGIF – Thankful Friday!

TGIF! My mood and motivation always perk up on Fridays, even if we don’t have specific plans for the weekend.

Weekend Postcard 1.25.14

Here’s my list of things to be thankful for from this past week:

  • This week, I got to do some cool things at work, for which I’m thankful. New brochures, a new newsletter, new maps, a new infographic.
  • I’m thankful for a box of stationery goodies in the mail.
  • I’m thankful the heat in my hubby’s car was working this week.
  • I’m thankful for Vitamin Water as an alternative to soda. Love the energy flavor.
  • I’m thankful for freelance client referrals.
  • I’m thankful for homemade chocolate chip cookies.
  • I’m thankful our cable TV was restored. It was a painful week with just the bare–bones network channels (which I almost never watch).
  • I’m thankful to PBS for airing a really interesting show about J.D. Salinger.
  • I’m thankful to our local grocery store for carrying such a fabulous Greek olive and feta cheese salad.

Hope you have some things to be thankful for this past week. Now go out and explore this weekend!

Summer Art – Postcards and A Map

I got a little behind in my creative summer challenges, so I’m happy to report I’m all caught up for now.

For assignment #5 we agreed to illustrate a postcard or series of postcards. I choose to use the words in my blog banner for inspiration. To illustrate these words, I dug through my pile of photographs from our adventures over the years, from living in the mountains to playing in the sea.

Explore.

Dream.

Discover.

For assignment #6 we agreed to illustrate a map. I was inspired by this site, which has the coolest variety of illustrated maps. I had all sorts of ideas for this one, but I decided to keep it relatively simple for my first attempt by doing a map of my favorite places in our downtown. I love the idea of illustrating maps to highlight favorite shops and restaurants, so I am hoping to practice this technique more.

At the end of last semester, we came up with a list of about 20 creative projects to work on over the summer to continue our creative learning. I’m not sure what we’re going to do for our next art project, but I’m hoping to keep these illustration experiments going. I’m thinking about working on a digital art project next, since I learned so much with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. In the meantime, I’m looking forward to getting back to my drawing practice.
