From My Sketchbook: October Theme

In order to fill up more sketchbooks, which is on my bucket list for 2015, I’m having fun coming up with new drawing prompts, so I’ve been trying to sketch A LOT more lately. One thing I’m doing is a monthly calendar, but instead of using it like a diary, I’m using it to do a daily doodle.

For the month of October, I’m going with a new theme centered around the spookiness of October.

As you can see, I usually just fill up every square in this grid, rather than just the days of the month. Stay tuned for my progress!

In order to fill up more sketchbooks, which is on my bucket list for 2015, I’m having fun coming up with new drawing prompts, so I’ve been trying to sketch A LOT more lately. One thing I’ve been doing is a monthly doodle calendar, but instead of using it like a diary, I’m using it to do a daily doodle.

For the month of September, I went with a theme centered around the woods and things you might see and find in the forest, since we usually start hiking again, now that it’s less buggy in the woods around here. It’s one of my favorite subjects to draw!

I’ve never drawn some of these little doodles before, so it was a good challenge, and I’m so happy with how this turned out! Happy drawing!

Pages From My Sketchbook

In order to fill up more sketchbooks, which is on my bucket list for 2015, I’m having fun coming up with new drawing prompts, so I’ve been trying to sketch A LOT more lately.

I found another drawing challenge on Instagram that looked fun. So far I’ve only managed to do the “dance” prompt. I wanted to stick with my theme of nature journal drawings, so I thought of birds and their funny mating dances.

I was inspired by the daily and weekly journal pages I see other artists do, so I thought I would try that.

But then I decided my days and weeks aren’t exciting enough to document, so I tried capturing an image that stuck with me from the week, which I really liked doing.sketchbook journal for one week

Now I’m thinking it’s more realistic for me to fill up a page a week of random doodles, which is less pressure and more fun to experiment with random ideas.sketchbook pag random doodles

I finally finished my sunflower frame, which I think I’m going to leave just like this. Once I digitize it, it will be easier to interchange hand-lettered sayings or an array of doodled birds or animals.sketchbook page sunflower frame

This is what I’m working on now – a fancy frame to resemble pressed leaves. I just need to fill in the areas around the frame.sketchbook page pressed leaves frame

This is why it always seems to take me so long to finish one page – so many ideas! Happy drawing!

Tiny Art: Week 2

I’ve managed to keep up with creating a new tiny piece of art every day for week 2.

I’ve been experimenting with watercolors and gouache, along with Micron pens to add a few details.

Here’s days 8-14:

Art Cards Week 2 setIt was fun to experiment with watercolor and gouache washes to get a few backgrounds ready for the next week of tiny art.

Art Cards Week 3 prep

You can follow my progress on Instagram as I participate in Victoria Johnson’s project called A Little Art, where you create a tiny piece of art everyday. These tiny pieces of art measure 2.5″ x 3.5″ or scraps of watercolor paper leftover from other projects.

Happy tiny drawing and painting!

From My Sketchbook

I have a few new pages from my sketchbook page to share with you today.

A new page inspired by my weekly bouquets of fresh cut flowers.

sketchbook page inspired by fresh cut flowersI love doing pages like this, sort of like a diary or journal entry, capturing a day with doodles. I’m hoping to do more like this to document our adventures.

Just some random doodles throughout the week to keep drawing and filling up a page. I’m working on making more marks, some swirls and flourishes in the open spaces, to really fill up the page.

Here are a couple new pages I’m working on right now:

Pages From My Sketchbook

I can’t believe August is almost over, which means summer is winding down around here. I illustrated a new theme for my sketchbook page of September doodles – the woods – since we will be hiking more again. I’m excited to fill it with doodles of things and creatures you might find in the woods.

I know, the month of August isn’t over yet. I think having a theme got me more excited to keep going, so I ended up finishing this page early. And I filled in each square on my grid, instead of limiting myself to just the days of August.

Stay tuned for the next month of doodles!
